Watchtower Library 2003
From Wine-Wiki
Because the 2003 version is rather old and has been replaced by more recent versions, this page has been not updated. You may wish to check Watchtower Library 2007
Wine 0.9.23
Installs without any native dlls. Frames still require resizing for the first time the library is run. Essentially the same as 0.9.14. As per the 2005 version, for M / * special characters The font system isn't working as in windows however a workaround is copying a replacement font file [1] to the ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts directory. These are fonts released under the GPL (see font information in the ttfs; the fontforge originals are found in the sources subdirectory). The tooltips still do not show text.
Wine 0.9.18-0.9.22
Doesnt install readily. It sometimes can be made to install but especially since a change around 0.9.21 it would not install.
Wine 0.9.14
instruction change: Wine will now install the Watchtower Library without any native dlls. The instruction now is:
- insert cd.
- type
- wine [path to cd]/setup.exe
if the icon is installed on your desktop, to run, click on the icon. (It appears not necessary to move the Meps folder)
window frames still require resizing for the first time you run the library, and the yellow pop up boxes are still empty. Print Preview causes the library to close, but sent items, and sent items preview work well. Word list has changed, and is still broken. Mouse usage only. All the same, this is a significant improvement.
Wine 0.9.13
Watchtower Library does not appear to install even when using nt/xp/98/50comupd.exe comctl dlls. At this stage, 0.9.7 is recommended.
Wine 0.9.7
wine setup
Use winecfg to install the wine folders. Then using your favorite method, copy win2k/xp comctl32.dll (or copy a late version of win98 comctl32 and commctrl.dll - note the dlls provided via the cd are inadequate for a wine install and an win2k or XP dll is preferred) accross to wine's system32 folder (.wine\drive_c\windows\system32\).
Wt Install
using winecfg, select the libraries tab and type commctrl, and click add; type comctl32, and click add. You have set wine to always use these dlls as native (we will change this later). Navigate to the cdrom and double click on setup.exe. When the license form appears, you will not be able to see the buttons where you agree to the license. These buttons are covered by the picture on the left. Click at the botton of the picture and you will find them. After selecting if you agree, then install with a hard drive install and a link to the desktop.
Running Wt
After installing, change wine's settings by typing winecfg on a command line. Click on libraries tab and remove the comctl32 and commctrl dlls for all wine software. On the main tab (applications), Select the button "add application", and navigate to wtlib.exe. You will find this by selecting first 'Program Files', Watchtower, Watchtower Library 2003, e (for english, or your language abbreviation), and there will be wtlib.exe! Click ok and you will be back to winecfg. Now select libraries and re enter comctl32 and commctrl (Now this will affect only wtlib.exe). Before finally running the software, you will need to copy all the dlls in the folder called MEPSCommon over to where the wtlib.exe is. Using your favorite method, navigate to .wine\drive_c\Program/ \Files\Watchtower\MEPSCommon\ copy all the files and then navigate to .wine\drive_C\Program/ Files\Watchtower\Watchtower Library 2003\e\ and paste them into there.
To run, double click on the icon on the desktop. Or use the command line, type in the home directory .wine\drive_c\Program/ Files\Watchtower\Watchtower/ Libary/ 2003\e\wtlib.exe (change the folder 'e' to suit your language). Using the native comctl32 dlls means wine runs quite well, including the wordlist and tooltips.
Known Issues
- With no Windows dlls and a clean wine install(eg. installed using comctrl32,commctrl, and then removed these dlls to run):
- WordList (Encyclopedia word index lookup) is barely workable, but can be used only by using the mouse (Workaround: use native Win2000 comctl32). Almost any use locks up the software and keyboard for about 5-10 seconds at a time (cpu 2Ghz, 1G RAM).
- When using the Wordlist, the entries display additional letters. eg. AA displays as /QS/AA, almost if an extra column is being shown.(Workaround: use native Win2000 comctl32)
- Supplements which usually display as subscript letters/asterix - these are not showing correctly (Currently they display as a empty box). These links do work if the mouse pointer clicks on them.
- Tooltips (yellow pop up boxes) do not display scripture quotes or supplements when the mouse hovers over a (Workaround: use an XP/Win2000 comctl32, see "Running wtlib" above)
- Menu Text, frames and pop up box text is incorrect - it currently displays a heavy bold itallic font. No workaround yet found.
- sound has occasional glitches when playing the pronounciation guides (workaround: oss seems best).
- Installation license form has a picture in the left frame which overflows it's box (width is good, but the height is wrong). The picture covers over the buttons at the bottom which are for 'accepting' the license (By clicking around the area and you will find them).
- To run, all the dlls in the MEPSCommon folder, must be copied into the folder where the wtlib.exe resides.
- Help files are not fully working, and sometimes will crash. Some pictures in the help file display poorly, sections of the picture are misplaced and some have incorrect colours.
Thanks to the wine developers, Wine no longer requires the oleaut32.dll to display map images.
Wine0.9.6
Installs using native comctl32 dlls. As a reminder, Oleaut32 is not necessary any longer.
Wine0.9.4
Current tests on Mandrake 10.1 do not install. Further testing is ongoing.
The application database has an apparent success on SuSE Linux 10.0 using windows 2000 comctl32 and commctrl dlls. Follow the installation instructions as given for Wine 0.93. Even the popup bibletexts work (with XP dlls and the installation of 50comupd.exe, which can be found in the Win32 subfolder of the wtlib cdrom)
Wine0.9.2 AND 0.9.3
Installs well, but only if using XP commctrl and comctl32 dlls. Copy these Dlls over to the fake windows/system32 directory. Note! This is a change in wine. The dlls must now be copied to the system32 directory.
Install Wine.
run winecfg
set dll overrides to comctl32, and commctrl and click apply, and exit
make sure wine has closed by typing on the commandline
wineserver -k
navigate to the cdrom and doubleclick on the file called setup.exe.
Follow the installation instructions, Hard disk instal recommended.
After installation, copy all the files and folders in from program files/watchtower/Watchtower Library/meps common to the folder where the file wtlib.exe exists. For english versions this is in ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Watchtower/Watchtower Library/e.
Make sure wine has finished by typing on the commandline wineserver -k.
Do not set the dll overrides for the setup.exe file as wine does not respect this. Only set the global overrides, or use the overrides via the commandline. XP dlls are the only dlls that work.
A message that Ikernel could not be copied means wine has not finished from the previous command. type wineserver -k to close wine and try again. The installation was tested with wine is set as 2003, XP, 2000, and also works with the Watchtower Library 2004.
Wine0.9.1
Possible to install on Mandrake 10.1 using dcom98, xp comctrl32 and commctrl dlls, but needs further testing, as two futher steps involving 1. setting the debugger 2. setting application to win98 via winecfg now appear necessary. Fixes: Maps now display, sound now mostly works, with a minor few glitches. Regressions: disabled buttons display incorrect colour. Mouseover button effect has incorrect colour. Existing Problems: Display of panes/panels still require adjustment for first use. Tooltips still not fully working. Wordlist is usable only by mouse.
Wine0.9
Doesn't seem to install
Wine20050830
Doesn't seem to install.
Wine20050725
The July Wine release Wine 20050725 is not recommended. Once installed it will run, but installation is not always successful. For those who wish to test - it may install with the dcom dlls being set as oleaut32=n,b;ole32=n,b;rpcrt4=n.
wine20050524
Installing
The Watchtower Library 2003 installation currently requires using the command line to install. There are two installation methods demonstrated, Basic, and Advanced (Advanced is for those who like to have more control over their Wine Installation). You may need a windows licence if you want to use DCOM98 and 50comupd.exe. A script installation that is currently under development can be located in the talk page for those who fear getting their feet wet.
Using the Library
The Watchtower Library 2003 works reasonably well with the latest version of Wine. For those who just want it to work...the recommended version of Wine is 20050211 as this is before the printer and sound regressions. If native dlls are used, maps and scripture tooltips can be seen. Assistance with troubleshooting the latest wine is welcomed.
The Wine-Wiki does not contain legal advice. Read any agreements carefully and if you have legal questions, you must ask a Lawyer.
Comparison with the previous Wine release
- Printing regression (Fixed)
- Native DCOM is still currently required for installation
- Only a WinXP comctl32.dll will reliably install the Library (new) Update: If using Win98 dlls, comctl32 and commctrl.dll are required
- Maps display with the native oleaut32.dll.
- winecfg is used for the Winesetup.
- winecfg can detect your sound settings but the sounds regression continues
- Only the contents of the MEPSCommon folder needs to be copied after an install.
- Help mostly works. One picture has incorrect colours. There are several very minor regressions.
- WordList - only use the mouse.
- Uninstall (new)
- Initial screens for Volumes [Books/Bible/Brochures] are compressed and need expanding.
Basic Installation Guide
This is recommeded for those new to Wine. By using the GPL tool Winetools we limit as much as practical the use of the command line.
Programs required
- Wine-20050524
- WineTools 2.1.1 found at Frank's Corner or WineTools Home Page
- Dcom98 (downloaded by WineTools)
- Comctl32.dll from Windows XP OR 50comupd.exe (provided on the cd)
- Watchtower 2003 CD
Watchtower Library 2003 Wine Install (Hard Drive Install)
Basic Installation Steps
Install Wine
- Install Wine from source or get a pre-compiled version.
- Install WineTools as instructed in the tar file
- Run WineTools by typing "wt" or "wt2" in a terminal window
- First Setup New Windows Drive and then do a Base Setup
Install DCOM98
- Do the Base Setup, Install Dcom98
Install comctl32.dll
- Copy the Windows Windows XP Comctl32.dll from C:\Windows\System\ over to the fake windows directory: ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system
Install Watchtower Library 2003
- In a terminal Window run Watchtower Library 2003 Setup.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="comctl32=n;rpcrt4=n;oleaut32=n;ole32=n" wine /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe
- Follow the prompts accepting the defaults for a Hard Drive Install
- Once installed, copy the contents of the folder found at .wine/drive_c/Program Files/Watchtower/MEPSCommon/ (27 dlls and 1 additional folder) accross to .wine/drive_c/Program Files/Watchtower/Watchtower Library 2003/e/*
Advanced Installation
The Advanced Installation is recommended for those with an existing Wine installation, or for those who wish to learn more about working with Wine. While it is not very hard, if you fear the command line, it is best to follow the Basic Installation instructions.
Programs required
- Wine-20050524
- winecfg (provided with wine)
- dcom98
- Comctl32.dll from Windows XP (the comctl dll from 50compud.exe (found on the cd) may work but requires further testing).
- Watchtower 2003 CD
Advanced Installation Steps
Install Wine
- Install Wine from source WineHQ, or get a pre-compiled version here.
- in a terminal window run winecfg
- Accept the defaults
- For the sound tab, click "Autodetect"
Install DCOM98
- Get a copy of DCOM98
- In a terminal window, navigate to the folder that contains DCOM98.EXE
- type wine DCOM98.EXE /c
- type path for the dialog box as c:\Windows\system (or browse to it with the Browse button)
- The message "this folder does not exist" indicates you have erred in typing the path.
Install comctl32.dll
- Copy the Windows Windows XP Comctl32.dll from C:\Windows\System\ over to the fake windows directory: C:\Windows\System\
- installing the comctl32 using 50comupd.exe.
- wine /mnt/cdrom/win32/50comupd.exe
- Despite the error msg, the commctl32 dll has been sucessfully installed. Bravely press on...
- You can confirm this by examining the contents of ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system/
- This Win98 dll requires it's partner, the commctrl.dll to be copied to the system directory.
Install Watchtower Library 2003
- In a terminal Window run Watchtower Library 2003 Setup.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="comctl32=n;rpcrt4=n;oleaut32=n;ole32=n" wine /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe
- Follow the prompts accepting the defaults for a Hard Drive Install
- Once installed, copy the contents of the folder found at .wine/drive_c/Program Files/Watchtower/MEPSCommon/ (27 dlls and 1 additional folder) across to .wine/drive_c/Program Files/Watchtower/Watchtower Library 2003/e/*
Running Watchtower 2003
Mandrake 10.1 Without native dlls The installation will install the Watchtower Library 2003 icon on the desktop. Double click the Icon.
- This will not display Maps.
Mandrake 10.1 With native dlls Right click on the icon, properties, the Application tab. Alter the command to read
WINDLLOVERRIDES="oleaut32=n" wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Watchtower/Watchtower Library 2003/e/wtlib.exe
Using the Command Line
Maps or Pictures are able to be displayed if Wine uses the native dll oleaut32.
In a terminal type
WINDLLOVERRIDES="oleaut32=n" wine /home/(your directory)/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Watchtower/Watchtower Library 2003/e/wtlib.exe
Tooltips for scriptures are working if Wine uses the native XP dll comctl32. Do not use comctl32 from 50comupd.exe as this causes the program to become unstable.
In a terminal type
WINDLLOVERRIDES="oleaut32,comctl32=n" wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Watchtower/Watchtower Library 2003/<language>/wtlib.exe
Creating a launcher
Sometimes you get tired of typing that long line. But if you want to create a launcher, with FC2 you cannot simply invoke "create launcher" and enter the line above, since the WINEDLLOVERRIDES etc will be interperted as a command. To keep maps functionality:
- Make a shell script called startwtlib.sh containing the above mentioned line:
.wine/$ echo WINDLLOVERRIDES="oleaut32,comctl32=n" wine start wtlib.exe > startwtlib.sh
- Set the permissions for startwtlib.sh
.wine/$ chmod +x startwtlib.sh
- Then create a launcher with type application pointing to your newly created /home/<username>/.wine/startwtlib.sh
Uninstalling the Watchtower Library 2003
type in a terminal window
WINEDLLOVERIDES="comctl32=n;rpcrt4=n;oleaut32=n;ole32=n" uninstall
Choose the Watchtower Library and select Uninstall.
Known Issues
- WordList is workable if using the mouse.
- Supplements in the Bible are not showing correctly, but they are working.
- Tooltips do not display scripture quotes (Unless using an XP comctl32, see "Running wtlib" above)
- Initial screens for Volumes [Books/Bible/Brochures] are compressed and need expanding.
- "X11DRV_CreateWindow invalid window with -22"
- Cannot edit or delete items in Favorates.
- Regressions with printing and sound
- "winspool:AddPrinterDriveA Cant't create Drivers key". Even after a reinstall of the generic Wine pps driver.
- "wine uninstall" does not correctly uninstall the Library. (it may be possible using WINEDLLOVERRIDES)
Troubleshooting and Common Error Messages
Finding Assistance
Where can I get help?
Please first check the troubleshooting list below. Otherwise if it is not covered here, you could carefully copy the error message and add it either to the discussion section for this page here or in the wine application database [2]. If you agree, after we find a solution, we then tidy up and post the solution here.
Please detail:
- What version of Wine you are using
- What version of Linux.
How do I make a post?
Select the edit tab. If you wish to create a login name, you can do so here , otherwise your post is logged under your IP address. If you do create a log in name, you also have the option of providing a private contact email address. This email address is not visable, but other registered users (like me) have a means of contacting you if we need further clarification. You may wish to provide a throwaway email address.
Where is my wine directory?
Wine installs in your home directory, and installs in a folder called ".wine" but often you cant see it. By default Linux hides directories starting with ".". You can set your window to show hidden files or type at the command line:
ls -a
Wine Installation
"wine:cannot open /home/(your directory) /.wine:no such file or directory"
- Wine has yet have a fake windows installed. Make sure you are not using root. The command line in a terminal window differs for Root (#) and User accounts($).
- Confirm you are not working as Root user by typing (this will close the terminal window if you are not a Superuser)
exit
If you have accidentally installed Wine as root user, you can clean this up by logging back in as a SuperUser
su (type your root password) cd /root
type with caution this command
rm -rf .wine exit
Either Force wine to create a fake windows directory by typing in a terminal window:
winecfg
OR Use WineTools, Base Setup, Create Fake Windows Drive
- Using WineTools will install a config file and ensure wine will 'emulate' Windows 98 Link to WineTools
- If this error still occurs see workaround for manually installing a fake windows directory below.
"wine: Unhandled exception...."
"Error of failed request:" "BadWindow (invalid: Window parameter)"
Wine has failed to install a fake windows directory. Manually install a fake windows directory using wineprefixcreate. In a terminal windows type:
wineprefixcreate --prefix ~/.wine
Further assistance with this error is welcome.
"wine:cannot find /mnt/cdrom/Setup.exe"
- Likely the cdrom is not mounted
- Open a Terminal window and type:
su (Enter your root password) mount /mnt/cdrom Type "man mount" or "man fstab" for further information (to exit from man type "q")
If you have more than one cdrom your path needs to specify the cdrom with Watchtower Library 2003
Dcom98
Installing Dcom98 can be troublesome.
"dcom98 will not install on NT"
- Workaround: Either
- Unpack the dlls in dcom98 as shown for Dcom98 (Recommended)
- OR Open a terminal window and type (Copied from Mike Hearn's Wine Knowledge Base)
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=ole32,oleaut32,rpcrt4=n wine dcom98.exe
- OR erase and reinstall the fake wine directory using WineTools.
Further Reading Installing Dcom98
"An installation support file could not be installed"
- Check the syntax for WINEDLLOVERRIDES, especially regarding oleaut32.
Watchtower Library Installation
"err:module:LdrInitializethunk "COMCTL32.DLL failed to initialize, aborting
- Check the syntax for the WINEDLLOVERRIDES
- common mistakes include a space after WINEDLLOVERRIDES, mispelling WINEDLLOVERRIDES, comctl32, commctrl, not using a semi colon (;) between the different dlls or trying to use an incorrect dll with a similar name
"err:thunk:_loadthunk(commctrl.dll,Cctl1632_Thunkdata16,comctl32.dll): Unable to load "commctrl.dll, error 2"
err:thunk:_loadthunk(commctrl.dll,Cctl1632_Thunkdata16,comctl32.dll):
Unable to load "commctrl.dll, error 2
^^^^^^^ "file not found"
This error occours with Wine 20050628 release, when a Win98 comctrl32 dll is used. This error message is referring to a missing commctrl.dll. Copy this dll over to the /windows/system directory.
Component Transfer Component: Watchtower Library. File Group: App English. File: Error: -2147467259
This (or similar) has been to known to occur with some older versions of wine. The only workaround is to use a later version.
"Watchtower Library needs Explorer 4 or Later"
- Check the WINEDLLOVERRIDES syntax for errors, especially with comctrl32.dll
- A later version of the Win98 comctl32.dll is available from
- Microsoft ComCtl32 redistributable (x86) for Windows 9x and Windows NT 4.0. 50comupd.exe (included on the Library Disk)
- WIN XP C:\Windows\System\comctl32.dll
- If this still occours use WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32=n;oleaut32=n;rpcrt4=n;comctl32=n"
Further Reading
"Setup requires Internet Explorer4 or greater to be installed before continuing"
- Usually this is caused by a syntax error with WINEDLLOVERRIDES.
- See also Watchtower Library needs Explorer 4 or Later.
"err:dbghelp:pe_load_file -Unable to peruse .DBG file COMCTL32.dbg (E:\\wine-501\\Server-2108-df29c)"
- these or similar are seen if the Win 98 files commctrl.dll and comctl32.dll are specified for installation and appear to be of no concern.
fixme:ole:CoRegisterMessageFilter stub
Copied from the Wine Users Mailing List Feb 5 2005
- " These fixmes are reminders that we should implement COM message filtering. They are harmless and can be ignored".
wine: cannot open /hom/(your directory) /.wine/drive_c/Program :no such file or directory"
- When typing Linux file paths, a folder name such as "Program Files" with a space need to be escaped i.e. with "\". Note the following example:
- wine /home/(your directory)/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Watchtower/Watchtower\ Library\2003/e/wtlib.exe
Linux can automatically fill this in for you if you partially type the folder name word and press TAB. (if several folders have similar names it will list these folders and allow you to try again)
InstallShield
"The InstallShield Engine could not be launched"
- Check the syntax or spelling for WINEDLLOVERRIDES ole32, commcrtl,comctl32 and rpcrt4
"The InstallShield Engine(ikernel.exe) could not be installed" "Ikernel.exe could not be copied to the 'c/:program files/common files"
- This appears to be usually caused by the wineserver not finishing before you repeat an InstallShield install or by a syntax error with WINEDLLOVERRIDES. Stop Wineserver by typing
wineserver -k
Sometimes this hangs, or gives an error message, and we need to be more persuasive by typing in a terminal window:
killall wineserver
If this error occours again, remove the InstallShield Engine folder and its subfolders from C:/Program Files/commonfiles/InstallShield/Engine/6/Intel32/
Check the spelling and syntax of WINEDLLOVERRIDES for oleaut32 and rpcrt4.
If this is not the reason, then carefully type (make a backup if you are unsure)
rm -rf ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Common\ Files/InstallShield/Engine
If this still doesnt fix the error, you may have an old version of wine. If your version is not later than 20050111, you will need to upgrade wine. Confirm your version of wine by typing in a terminal
wine --version
The Install hangs, and does not display the license
Close the terminal window, open a new terminal and stop the wine server
wineserver -k
- If this hangs or gives an error, see above "The InstallShield Engine could not be installed" for further options.
Check the syntax of the WINEDLLOVERRIDES, notably the spelling of comctl32.
- Open a Terminal and type
For the XP or Explorer 4 Dll: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="rpcrt4=n;oleaut=n;ole32=n;comctl32=n;" wine /mnt/cdrom/Setup.exe
- OR Use Wine Tools to install a fake windows drive
- If this error still occurs currently the only fix is to use a config file. If building from source, a sample is provided. Navigate to the folder with the source files and copy the sample config file accross to the fake windows. (The official Wine web site has an example config here or if you have used a prepackaged install, it is included in the folder /documentation/samples)
These instructions assume that the source file is in your home directory.
cd /wine 20050111/documentation/samples cp config /home/(your home directory)/.wine
Further assistance in identifying the missing option that the config workaround provides is welcome.
Running Watchtower Library
Invisible Volumes [Books/Bible/Brochures]
I cant see the Volumes [Books/Bible/Brochures]
It is there, but the selection window area overlap and are squeezed to the top. Move the mouse close to the top until it changes from a pointer to a symbol like -||- (but horizontal). Then click and drag the window down to diplay the selection window.
Printing
How Can I Print from the Watchtower Library 2003?
- Wine20050310 Does not seem to be able to print.
Further assistance with this is appreciated. Some installs of Wine20050111 on Mandrake 10.1 can print, and others cannot. Check that you can print with Wine, by running Notepad and trying to print. Open a terminal window:
notepad
Type some text and try printing.
If you cannot print with Watchtower Library 2003 you can still print using a text editor.
Select text with the mouse, right click and select Copy. Open a text editor such as Open Office and Paste. Print away!
Sound
How do I play the Pronouncable words
- Versions later than Wine20050310 do not seem to be able to play the sound files. Update.. wine version>0.9 seem fine.
- This needs further investigation. As there are many options for sound on linux, often Wine need to be configured for your system. First check that sound does work on your computer, and then configure Wine as follows.
- Type in a terminal window
winecfg
- select the sound tab, and click Autodetect.
Accessing Help
There was an error opening.... Help File
The help file can be opened using wine's help file software. This software will automatically start after this message. Click on the file Menu, Open, Browse, C:, Program Files, Watchtower Library, Watchtower Library Help, and open the help file.
Debugging Tips
Often when debugging, there are specific debugging channels that particularly apply.
To display the loading of dlls, to check which load as native, or builtin and display subsequent errors
