Tips, Instructions and Guides about Wine.

You are welcome to 'get your feet wet' with the following small tasks

  1. Find and Fix typos - do spelling errors irk you? This could be a job for you.
  2. Fix a bug in an example - If you followed the advice and found a mistake, why not help out.
  3. Make an explanation clearer - Build on the work of others by sharing what you have found

If you quote a developer please give recognition by providing a link if at all possible and provide a date. Usually quotes look like:

Wine Expert's Name: [Jun 05] Here is a real handy tip...

When making corrections that significantly change the meaning of a quote, you may be required to change the name. In general, keep links to mailing list discussions but remove the name. If you can supply a link to any reference information, this will help the administrators.

Here is an example: Changing... "M. Hearn: [Feb 06] 'dont do this...'" to say "yes you can but only sometimes" may be no longer quoting M. Hearn and unless there is a reference link, his name should be removed.

When deciding which Wiki to post to, remember that the official wiki.winehq.org is a developer oriented wiki, keeping track of developer todos, perhaps project pages, etc. Whereas this wiki is a documentation gathering point, instructions, etc. including user-level docs.

Are There any Posting Rules?
Yes

Posts must be for the advancement of Wine and dignify all participants.

The Wine-Wiki's Goals can be simply described as the furtherance of Wine. Other topics while valid and perhaps even important, belong elsewhere.

This wiki is not for posting 'objectional' material or links. Wine-wiki has set link attributes to prevent google following any external links added by users, making spamming quite pointless. This does not prevent spam as Spammers generally don't understand it's significance, but it does mean that they don't actually benefit from it.

However if we find this to be a concern, be aware that we reserve the right to change the country of the server that hosts the wiki. For example in New Zealand, posting links to objectional material as deemed by the law or the Chief Censor has resulted in criminal convictions, fines and jail terms. We are currently aware of a man who has recently been jailed for posting objectionable links on a website, and there is a recent court case regarding the sale of medication over the internet which has yet to reach conclusion. Considering the vigor with which this has been pursued in the past we would not wish for anyone to inadvertantly break the law.

What is this Wine?

This wiki is about the software called Wine.

Briefly, Wine is Open Source software that enables Linux users to run many of their favourite Windows programs. You can freely (and easily) download a copy and then compile it yourself, freely use one of the many precompiled packages, or pay Codeweavers a small sum and recieve a few extras and some aditional support.

Copyrights

Copyright is a concern for all Wiki's. Please do not submit copyrighted work without permission.
If you have found your copyrighted work here without adequate recognition or permission, because this is a wiki you can fix it. When you do, make a note in the summary box why this is the case so that the Administrators will be aware of the reason.

Links to External Sites

When Linking to an external sites, check for any policy statements about linking and if you find one, provide an additional link to this policy page. Some sites prefer links only to the home page, while others don't mind deep links. In general, when a site permits deep links, as a courtesy we ask for any links to point to the page with the download, rather than the download itself. As this is a wiki, if you find a link to your site that you wish to be changed, feel free to change it yourself. When doing so, it may be best to obtain a user name and add a note with some contact information so the administrators will be aware of the reason, can identify your posts and readily contact you for any clarifications.

Make a link to the site by enclosing the link in brackets: [ ]. To clarify you may also use [site name |clarification] which will hide the long URL.

The Wiki shines by giving respect and recognition where it is due. Because of this, misrepresenting a link for an external site is treated very seriously. When administrators become aware of this, it may result in a warning but should this occur repeatedly or the administrators feel that it was of a serious nature it may result in a temporary removal of editing privileges or in some cases a permanent ban. Any appeal process is according to the Wine-wiki.org:Policy
