Lotus Notes by IBM is widely used and for many is their sole reason to use Wine. This software is regularly commented on in the forums. Some use the Wine version sold by Codeweavers.com as Lotus Notes is one of their supported applications.

  • Please consider submitting your test results for running this software under Wine.
Become a Maintainer
Please consider volunteering to be an additional Maintainer for this software.

Regularly Submitting results for installing and running on the latest version of Wine makes a big difference for others considering using Wine. By looking at how well the software runs others can be encouraged to try it themselves and together you can make progress in finding workarounds. By testing the software you will also notice when something breaks and when you make a bug report, the bugzilla team will often point it out to the person who broke it. If you are slightly more technically minded, you are able to regularly compile wine and test it before each fortnightly release then you will catch breakages before each wine release.

  • Who can be a Maintainer? - anyone. no programming experience required.
  • What is required of a Maintainer? - not much, but you do make a real difference.

A big advantage of being a maintainer is that as you quickly become familiar with installing and using wine with your software, you can have a direct hand in improving wine and your software. Many times you will find very handy tips posted by others and by posting a summary many benefit from your work. When you are asked a question you don't know, simply post in the wine-users forum and perhaps someone can help.

Just by being there, you make a difference. A maintainer quickly tests each monthly release of wine, and adds to the application database a rating of how good it runs.. gold/silver/bronze or garbage. Wine is constantly being improved, and occasionally something breaks. When you do spot a breakage, file a bug in bugzilla and if you want to try and fix it you can then post to the wine-devel mailing list for advice. However, if you have a little spare time (usually about 2 hours, in between doing other things) regression testing allows you to identify which patch caused the break. By filling out a bugzilla report, posting the name of the software, and the patch which broke it to the wine-devel mailing list, the developer who broke it can have a look at fixing it.

  • This often results in very quick fixes.

[edit] Current Status

  • [Jul 06] D. Kegel: Thanks to a few targeted patches written by Stefan Siebert and James Hawkins, and of course decades of effort by the whole Wine team, Lotus Notes 7 trial version now installs and runs! See http://wiki.winehq.org/LotusNotes for details.
  • [Nov 05] Notes 6.5 does not work with the 0.9 on Debian unstable. (wine user list)
  • J. Lang [Oct05]: the reason it doesn't work in NT mode seems to be that Notes, in NT mode, calls NtQueryVirtualMemory on another process. As this isn't supported (yet?) in Wine, that fails.
  • [July 05] http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3D2660 is fixed.
  • [A user installed Wine from CVS (7/5/05) after a clean rebuild.]: This is the first version I have been able to use with Notes 6.51 since 12022004.[...]It seems that the current CVS code does not have problems with [attachments].[...] Couple graphics glitches but nothing I cant live with.
  • Lotus Notes 7 beta 3 + wine 20050725 on Kubuntu Hoary / KDE 3.4.2 is much better than previous releases (now, it works). First bugs :
    • mouse pointer disappear on repainted zones (tabs, left mail menu...)
    • Notes always wants to have focus

[edit] Running Linux Software from within wine

A user reported [feb 06 wine user] I've set the following:

Location Preferences > Internet Browser ...Internet Browser = Other (Firefox, Mozilla, etc)
Location Preferences > Internet Browser ...Internet Browser path = Z:\usr\bin\firefox

However he reported: When I click on a hyperlink in a document, I get the Notes error "Unable to locate program.". He then found the way around this issue: The quick answer is to make the linux app appear more like a windows app. Creating the following wrapper solved the problem:

----------C:\Program Files\firefox.exe-----------
#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/firefox "$1"
exit
-------------------------------------------------

  • [Mar 06] Notes 6.5 runs well under Wine 0.9.8 and 0.9.9 after forcing usp10.dll to native Wine Archive
  • [Jan 06] One user reported: I upgraded to Wine 0.9.4 and Notes is very unstable.
  • [July 05] Using Wine 12022004 the indexing functionality works perfectly. I cannot run any version of Notes between 12022004 and 06282005 because Wine is unstable with those versions and Notes 6.51. Wine Archive
  • A user reported Wine 20041019 runs Lotus Notes well.
  • [30 June 05] the CVS version few days back [ran] Lotus Notes client R5.0.12, which seems to work MUCH better than the previous release with no apparent bugs/crashes... Nevertheless, the best thing will be to download it and test ALL the functionalities (for your Notes client version) that you need and use (on a different box to save everything you have). You can also check the application database to see if someone else has already tried it! Wine Archive
  • [May 06] I'm running Lotus Notes 7.0 beta2 successfully by setting usp10 to native, this was the only override I needed. Haven't tried with 0.9.14 yet, but 0.9.13 and 0.9.12 were fine. wine archive
  • Wine 20050830 will not startup Notes 6.51,[until..] I deleted usp10.dll.so from /usr/lib/wine and that solved it. Wine Archive
    • R. Shearman: Set the dll overrides for usp10 [Uniscribe Unicode Script Processor Library] to "native" or "" until it is sufficiently implemented.
    • right click Save of an attachment: Notes shut down. The crash handler reported and error in uxtheme.dll. Reverting back to Wine 20050725 solves this issue.

[edit] Troubleshooting

  • Further Details are Unknown as this stage. (Feel free to add them)

Attaching and detaching files
A user reported a problem in attaching and detaching files . Has anybody some solution for this issue .

Another user reported: 20050628 (as packaged for Debian) no longer exhibits this problem. Wine Archive

[edit] Wine 20050725

A user reported [August 05]: I'm currently testing Lotus Notes 7 beta 3 + wine 20050725. First, it is much better than previous releases (now, it works).

First bugs :

  • mouse pointer disappear on repainted zones (tabs, left mail menu...)
  • Notes always wants to have focus

Config running  : Kubuntu Hoary / KDE 3.4.2 [Wine Archive]

[edit] CVS 7/5/05

A User reported: I just installed Wine from CVS (7/5/05) after a clean rebuild. This is the first version I have been able to use with Notes 6.51 since 12022004. As for attachments it seems that the current CVS code does not have problems with them. Notes seems faster which is good, since it is a pig anyway. Couple graphics glitches here and there, but nothing I can't live with and definitely some glitches have been fixed.

  1. . Right click menu for attachments takes about 1 second the for the menu to appear. Move off the attachment icon (I move my cursor to the right) and it appears a little sooner.
  2. . In one of my databases they have a black background header and the text is drawn black, so you can't see it (did this in 12022004 as well). (think only happens with "white" text as the "yellow" text shows fine.)

All and all pretty happy at the moment. Wine Archive
