FAQ
From Wine-Wiki
Can I add Wine information to this wiki?
Yes.
Should I get a login account?
That is your choice. If you do, your chosen pseudonym enables us to identify your area of interest and expertise, and you will recieve recognition for your contributions. It may even lead to a job if someone likes your style. Those who have demonstrated their technical ability and support for wine documenation are shown considerable trust by Administrators, wheras an anonymous user usually recieves more attention. Even if you are starting out and learning to use Wine, you are most welcome. It is a friendly place here and we always appreciate fresh insights and viewpoints.
When obtaining a login account, if you provide an email address, we have a private way of contacting you for discussing the wiki work and the occasional clarification.
Note: No emails are shown, sold, given out, or borrowed.
Should you get a login account? We would prefer you do, but it is a free world.
Does this Wiki replace any of the Official Wine Documentation?
NO. We provide an easy to change, supplement for the Official Documentation. When posting please be aware that Wine Developers are invited to base official documentation on any portion from the Wiki, but to be very clear we repeat: This Wiki does not compete with nor replace any of the Official Wine Documentation.
Wine is progressing fast. The Wiki allows the tips and information to be listed by users of Wine. We quote official documentation such as the Wine News (and include a link) but our Wine Wiki Goals are:
- Endeavouring to post tips and comments made by users and developers
- Providing an area for users to discuss documenting how to install their favourite software on Wine - before updating Wine Appdb [Application Database]
- Provide a place to Document unofficial Wine Developer tips and guides for new developers
- Provide tutorials, tips and how-to articles for using and developing Wine (with links to official documentation)
- Direct people to find the relevant official documentation
The official wiki.winehq.org is a developer oriented wiki, keeping track of developer todos, perhaps project pages, etc. Whereas this wiki is a documentation gathering point, instructions, etc. including user-level docs
If you are a programmer you you may choose to comment about your work and experiment with documentation ideas on the official Wine wiki (You are always welcome here - but we support the official sites).
Just as there are many unofficial documents and books on the same topics, we also are covering Wine from a different angle to the Official documentation.
Can I ask the Wiki a question about Wine?
The Wine-Wiki is more focused on working with documenting tips and writing guides for Wine, so unfortunately the developers will not see your message.
Please raise your query on the Wine user or Wine devoper mailing lists at gmane.comp.emulators.wine.devel. You can freely post with most newsgroup editors, but it is better if you sign on. They are very helpful - especially if you can provide detailed information about your problem with a good descriptive subject line (Consider carefully the subject line for your post. Anything like: 'help!' or 'Problem' is not preferred).
If you find some good information, feel free to add it to the wiki.
I found a really good tip from the Wine mailing list-can I copy it to the Wiki?
Yes! That is an excellent idea. Please clearly reference the experts you quote. They really deserve recognition for their efforts. Mention their name and a date, and if you have the time try and add a link so readers can investigate further in the mailing lists like this:
[http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-devel/(etc) Wine Archive]
Here are links to the Mailing List Archives:
When posting about a topic covered in the Wine Weekly News, dont forget to link to the article - we always want to support the official documentation.
What if they are having a 'frank and honest exchange of views' in the mailing list, what do I copy?
The Wiki is for documenting the tips and suggestions that could benefit a Wine User or Wine Developer. You could..
- Tactfully note the final decision
- Respectfully present both views (The Wine Weekly News has good examples of this) or even better...
- Wait for the Wine Weekly News to cover this, and base your comments on this newsletter (remember to provide a link)
- Leave it for another time when things settle down. It will get covered again
I found a really good tip from the web-can I copy it to the Wiki?
If you wish to merely cut and paste - We may need their permission.
- Check the site for a policy statement
- Always give a link to the original site
- It would be best if you send an email to the sites' owner with a link to this site
Otherwise, please feel free to add your experiences and give a link to the site. We appreciate your taking the time to include your experiences. Your unique viewpoint will help other people to understand Wine.
How does Wine-Wiki keep up to date?
It is with the help of people like you. Each time you reference the wiki, if you update by correcting and or amplifying the article we build on the work of each other. If you can't program, you can often help with documentation for both the Wiki and the Official Wine Documentation.
Can we move this info into the Wine Documentation
Good Idea!
Dimi Paun: the SGML docs have moved over to the CVS SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=6241
I'll be managing that tree for now (unless Alexandre wants to do it :)). Please send your patches as you usually do to wine-patches@winehq.org, but make sure to prefix the subject with '[WINEDOCS]' so I can more easily spot them. Discussions should take place on wine-devel@winehq.org as per normal. The new repository is set up with translations in mind, so hopefully will be able to handle them better in the future. I'll be working with Francois to integrate the French translation shortly.
Should I get a haircut?
We are unsure. Probably.. Yes, you should.
